Rebuilding Providence through Urban Acupuncture

Providence 2013

Providence is the capital of Rhode Island, it was once a booming industrial city. After World War II, the exodus of industry and people combined with the invasion of freeways to decimate the central city. A vast area of city remains undeveloped. The recent removal of an elevated cross-town freeway offers the opportunity to redevelop the central city. This project proposes to re-urbanize Providence by introducing an urban structure that creates a public space network to reconnect isolated parts of the city. The main intervention is a new public square and theater as the heart of the more abandoned part of the city. The project addresses also, street design and building typologies for the re urbanization project.
